Mathew Crawford Architects

About us

Mathew Crawford Architects is an RIBA Chartered Practice based in London and the South East. We were established in 2020 with a single goal, to create elegantly crafted buildings which bring joy to all those who experience them.

During his 15 years working for large established architecture practices, our founder gained experience across many sectors, building types and scales. We enjoy the challenges presented by projects of all types and approach them all with a consistent pragmatism and design rigour to achieve the utmost quality. Sustainability sits at the heart of everything we do.

Meet our founder

Mathew started his career in his home City of Birmingham working for BPN Architects. Whilst there he completed a variety of projects from one of houses to hotels, event spaces and park pavilions. The projects often included work to existing buildings. He graduated with First Class Honors and was shortlisted for the RIBA Bronze Medal award, a prestigious award for students of architecture.

After relocating to London, Mathew completed a Masters in Architecture whilst also working for MJP Architects, well known for buildings such as BBC Broadcasting House (where the One Show is filmed), amongst others. During his time at MJP he led many large scale projects, including a 28 storey tower in Stratford and a project for the University of Surrey comprising 950 new student bedrooms.

In 2020, Mathew took some time out to travel the world. Starting in Mongolia, he travelled south through China, Indonesia on to Australia and New Zealand. He continued around the world to Central America. Whilst in Guatemala he volunteered for a green building company who develop experimental construction techniques to build local schools.

Upon his return in 2020 Mathew relocated to Lewes, East Sussex where he established Mathew Crawford Architects. During a brief 6 month period he completed 5 projects.

In 2022 Mathew joined Putney based practice Assael Architecture as an Associate. In the 2 years that followed he led large residential projects, including a 350 home project in Woolwich, a 34 storey tower in Birmingham and a mixed use development in Croydon which incorporated a new leisure centre. But after a 2 year hiatus, he yearned to continue what he had started in his own practice and in 2024 Mathew Crawford Architects was re-established.
