Overview
Located in the London Borough of Camden and backing onto the scenic Hampstead Heath, Savernake Road sits within the Mansfield Road Conservation Area. The existing property is a charming two-bedroom garden flat on a picturesque, tree-lined street.
Our clients—a young professional couple—approached us to adapt their home for their growing family by adding an additional bedroom, utility room, and office space.
After exploring several design options, we proposed a modest rear infill extension to best meet their needs. The existing master bedroom and ensuite have been retained, while the family bathroom has been relocated to the center of the flat, cleverly utilising the underused space in the original second bedroom. This relocation created the opportunity for a new children’s bedroom complete with built-in wardrobes.
A new utility room is planned adjacent to the existing kitchen, and a bright, functional office space will overlook the courtyard garden—providing both practicality and a connection to the outdoors.
Appearance
We explored two distinct architectural styles for the extension.
The first option embraces a more traditional aesthetic, featuring a flat roof, brickwork walls, and heritage-style Crittall windows. Rooflights are integrated into the flat roof to enhance natural daylight and ventilation in the bedroom and utility areas.
The second option offers a more contemporary design. It showcases a mono-pitch roof with expansive glazing, creating a light-filled, modern interior. The entire extension is clad in timber, which continues seamlessly from the walls over the roof, giving it a unified and striking appearance.
