Mathew Crawford Architects designed this contemporary, light-filled kitchen-diner as a rear extension to a Victorian home in the Lewes Conservation Area.
The space is flooded with natural light thanks to two striking 3-metre-long rooflights and expansive Crittall-style windows, which create a seamless connection between the dining area and the courtyard garden.
The client envisioned a modern, elegant aesthetic—realised through a sleek, minimalist kitchen and a polished micro-cement floor that completes the look with understated sophistication.
“When we purchased our house on a prominent corner of a Conservation Area, we didn’t know if it would even be possible to get planning permission for our extension. But with Matt’s expert knowledge of the planning system and fantastic design skills, we have managed to achieve our dream. We really appreciated Matt’s attention to our budget throughout the whole process, helping us to make the most of our modest budget. Matt is a fantastic listener. He went to great lengths to understand what we needed for our growing family. At the start of the process Matt presented several options, taking time to explain the pros and cons of each. Once we chose a preferred option, Matt developed the design to a great level of detail. He delivered an excellent pack of information and helped us discuss our project with local builders. We took on the difficult task of managing the build ourselves, and Matt was always there to help us understand every stage of the process. We couldn’t be happier with our amazing new space!“
